Students of the Law Faculty will provide migrants with the legal assistance

Krasnoyarsk regional Branch of the Association of Lawyers of Russia and the Krasnoyarsk Regional Department of the Federal Migration Service initiated meeting concerning the question of organization of the Free Legal Assistance Centre for migrants. This meeting took place on the 18th of September.

The meeting was held in the Civil Assembly of Krasnoyarsk Krai. There were representatives of Krasnoyarsk Regional Branch of the Association of Lawyers of Russia, Krasnoyarsk Regional Department of the Federal Migration Service, Government of the Krasnoyarsk Krai, the Law Institute of the Siberian Federal University, national communities and public organizations.

Law institute was presented by the director I.V. Shishko and the Head of the International Law Department, T.Y. Sidorova.

The main topic of the discussion was the establishment of the Legal Assistance Center for migrants.

The head of the Krasnoyarsk Regional Department of the Federal Migration Service V. N. Katrechko in his speech persuaded audience that the establishment of such center would assist the integration of migrants into the Russian society, help them with various legal issues and support their lawful behavior.

The main problem is training consultants due to the lack of lawyers specializing in migration law. Law Institute assumed responsibility for this training. TYuSidorova outlined the project providing the training of students for work in this center for the participants of the meeting.

Institute organizes special training for students of the 3rd, 4th and 5th years of studies to provide qualify counseling. The training program consists of 32 hours, designed by the Law Institute and the Federal Migration Service. Classes for students will be conducted by lecturers of the Institute and specialists from the FMS. The training will be conducted during the fall semester, and only after that students will be allowed to give legal advice to migrants. (Beginning in 2013)

Because the number of migrants is growing, additional competencies required for consulting activities in the sphere of migration law, will be needed in students’ future careers.
