6 - 10 October, 2014 Siberian Federal University plans to hold a round table "Indigenous and minority peoples of the Arctic and the right to ancestral territory: international and national aspects", in which environmental, socio-economic and ethno-cultural problems of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic region will be discussed.
At the international level there is a series of acts related to the rights of indigenous peoples. However, their States’ implementation differs by theirdiversity. Also, nowadays there is an actual problem connected with the development of a mechanism to protect the rights of indigenous peoples.
One of the main problems of the rights of indigenous peoples is to preserve their ancestral territory of residence. Rates of the industrial development in the Arctic region are rising due to various causes, including global warming. This creates new challenges for habitat conservation of Arctic indigenous peoples.
Unfortunately, the efforts of the states currently are not able to stop the disappearance of some indigenous peoples, which raises the problem of studying their culture, lifestyle, heritage.
Discussion of these issues is relevant for all Arctic countries who are most interested in their favorable outcome, because they need to find out a balance between their own economic development and preservation of the native population living in the Arctic.
