Webinars on international protection of environment in English

As part of the circle of environmental studies with the support of REC "Japan Center SFU" in the Law Institute of SFU webinars will be held in English, with the participation of prof. Koga Mamura and students of the University Seynan (Japan). M.V. Lomaeva, assistant of the department of labor and environmental law of Law Institute SFU, will lead the webinars from SFU.

On webinars students of both universities will present presentations and discuss urgent issues of international environmental law, will compare approaches to environmental protection in Russia and Japan.

         1. Biodiversity.

         2. The living marine resources in general, and whales in particular.

2. May 8, 2015, from 14.15 to 15.15, room. 115. Discussion Questions:

      1. Production of marine mammals, its regulation and protection of animals (comparison of measures and legislation of the Russian Federation and Japan).

      2. The problem of reconciling the production and conservation of fishery resources in relations between the states.

      3. Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity, 1992 in Japan and Russia.

      4. Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the hunting of marine mammals.

      5. Development of non-consumptive uses of marine mammals (ecotourism, whale watching, etc.).

3. May 22, 2015, from 14.14 to 15.45, room. 115. Discussion Questions:

      1. "pros" and "cons" of whaling in international regulation: the search strategy of interaction and cooperation in the future.

      2. Admissibility and limits of the consumption of cetaceans and marine mammals in accordance with environmental law.

      3. Alternative of consumptive use of marine mammals.

      4. Preservation of the animals and research.

      5. Preservation of the animals and traditional culture.

      6. "Man vs. Whale": anthropocentric and ekocentric approaches.
