Achievements of the Law Institute of Siberian Federal University on the International competition named after P. Jessup.

From 3 to 7 February 2016 15th Russian Rounds of international competition on public international law named after Philip Jessup ("Jessup Competition") was held in Moscow.

Being the "Olympic Games" for law students from over the world, the Jessup Competition takes place fully in English in the form of imitation of the meeting of the International Court of Justice and covers the most actual issues of public international law. For example in 2016 the dispute between fictional states Amestonia and Risland affects issues of legality of mass surveillance and preventive detention in the context of human rights, as well as their validity in the fight against the terrorist group, "The Hive" serving opposes of the using of neonicotinoids. In addition this year the case of the competition covers the issues of interpretation and compliance of international treaties, as well as the problems of bringing to liability the States for cyber attacks which cause the damage to another States.

Traditionally Russian Rounds are the biggest national Rounds of competition. So, this year they have gathered 42 teams and nearly 200 participants from different cities of Russia.

Siberian Federal University (SFU) was represented by the students of the second degree of Comparative Law Department of Law Institute – Maria Buneva and Julia Savicheva. The trainers of our team were Ksenia Gulyaeva and Anastasia Kachanova, who are the graduates of Comparative Law Department of the SFU, the winners of the national Round of Jessup in 2013 and the participants of 1/16 the international stage of the competition as a part of SFU team in 2014. According to the results of the four qualifying rounds the team of the Siberian Federal University took the 20th place in the ranking of the best Russian teams.

Note that in 2016 the team of the SFU is a one team, which was represented by only two students, who furthermore turned out to be the youngest participants in the national stage of the competition. Most of the teams which take part in a competition composed of 4-5 senior students, students of magistracy or graduate school, who have already learned the course of international law. Despite such serious competition our students were able to show a great result, which is a worthy start of a new complement of the team in this competition.

The trainers of the team – Ksenia and Anastasia also noted that students have successfully coped with assigned tasks. They are not only deeply explore the problematic issues of this year’s case and put legal argumentation in a written memorandum of plaintiff and defendant, but also successfully presented their position during the oral Rounds of competition.

We asked Masha and Julia share with us their impressions from the Jessup competition.
