Profession «Lawyer»: from theory to practice
The first Summer Law School for law students was held on the territory of the TIY (Territory of the Initiative Youth) “Byrusa” in Krasnoyarsk. “Profession «Lawyer»” is a joint project of the SFU Law Institute, Krasnoyarsk Regional Department of the Russian Lawyers Association and A.S Gorelik Social Committee for the Human Rights Protection. The participants were 75 students from the law universities from Krasnoyarsk, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Novokuznetsk and republics Khakasia and Buryatia. The tutors were experienced lawyers, including the Chairman of Regional Parliament, the SFU President A. Uss, the Prosecutor of the Krasnoyarsk Region Y. Baranov, the Chairman of the Arbitrage Court of Krasnoyarsk Region D. Surkov, the Head of Federal Service of Punishment Execution, the President of the Bar of Krasnoyarsk Region S. Maltov, the vice-director of the Main Investigation Administration of the Main Administration of Home Affairs N. Yudaeva, the director of the Regional Amnesty Commission T. Mashkina, the director of the Law Institute of the SFU I. Shishko. The classes were being held by professors N. Schedrin, N. Stoyko, the advocate and associate professor A. Nazarov, the judge of the Arbitrage Court of the Krasnoyarsk Region R. Razhkov. In the scope of the School students socialized with the professionals in five directions: “public image”, “communication”, “team”, “self-management”, “competitiveness”. The special issues of the students’ newspaper of the SFU Law Institute “Lawyer”, which was daily distributed to the participants, were devoted to these directions. Every day a plenty of trainings, master-classes, personal image-sessions, debates with employers were held in the School. The young tutors of the Law Institute, who have improved qualification in Legal Technologies and Mediation Center of the Ural State Law Academy half a year ago, conducted classes on the basics of mediation (alternative dispute resolution and negotiation). It is important to note that TIY “Byrusa” was the place where the Krasnoyarsk Regional Department of the Russian Lawyers Association and the representatives of the main personnel-clients in Region have signed the Memorandum of Cooperation in Employment Assistance of graduating students of regional law institutes. According to the words said by A. Uss, although universities educate lots of lawyers, there is still shortage of them. And the main reason is that organizations do not desire to work with students. “In the network of the lawyers association we have to make this form of activity permanently operating. Concerning the professional orientation it has to work more distinctly. It is important because people, who come to law universities, need to understand what they want from education. This understanding has to be present as from the side of graduate students, as from the side of those who employ specialists from law institutes. It is a conventional wisdom that there is the redundancy of lawyers. That is not true. We might have lots of people with legal education, but the purpose is that everyone with such title has to meet the expectations of people and society”, - noted Alexander V. Uss. The Director of the Law Institute of the SFU, a member of the Krasnoyarsk Regional Department of Russian Lawyers Association Irina Shishko expressed her certainty about the fact that the Summer School on the “Byrusa” will become regular activity, and that next year young specialists, who just finished the University and are making first steps in a new profession, will visit it. Irina Shisko: “The professional Schools of such kind (the Summer Law School of TIY “Byrusa” is unique in Russia) will let students to understand the diversity of the law-profession, make a right choice concerning the future job, precisely plan an individual education path in the University, and, consequently, ensure a more successful professional path”.
